Systems FAQ

Can I run this without WordPress?

This plugin is designed to run on WordPress as it has the flexibility and available features to make setting this up as easy as possible. Creating this on it's own standalone platform would add significant complexity.

My existing site doesn't use WordPress, can I still use this?
Does it work with my theme?
What are the requirements?
Is it complicated to set up?

Some complex themes can interfere with the design of the plugin, but it's been tested with several standard WordPress themes, as well as Customizr and Hello Elementor. If you find your usual theme interferes with the design of RouteFinder, you can use a free plugin Multiple Themes to specify a different one for the RouteFinder pages.

The plugin can be added to any WordPress instance and has a setup process to get you up and running quickly.

There's plenty of website designers that make setting up simple websites a breeze. However, these lack the features to support advanced customisations. If you're not using WordPress for your website, you'll need to set one up to use this plugin.

There's plenty of options - create a 'subdomain' for your website e.g. routefinder.myclub.org - this can be kept separate from your normal site. You can edit your DNS for your domain name to point this to a different site without affecting your normal one.

If your current host doesn't support WordPress, you can use something like Hostinger to very quickly and easily set up a new site - this can cost as low as a few $USD or £GBP each month.

You'll need the Leaflet, Extensions for Leaflet and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugins for this plugin to work. All of these plugins are free.

Can you host this for me?

Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to host this on your behalf. This plugin has been a hobby to create and I'm not in the web hosting business. But setting up your own WP site is easy with a host that supports it. Check out Hostinger - you don't need to move your domain to them or buy another, just set up a subdomain in your DNS for a second site.

Can you install it for me?
Is it mobile friendly?
Will this use extra bandwidth?
Can I move my config and routes to a different site?

It sure is! It's built to work on desktop and mobile. The site will follow your browser/system dark mode setting and you can over-ride this in the site as well. Some plugins might interfere with this, but give it a go!

Sure! The plugin has an import/export function that makes it easy to move your setup to another site, or share your routes & destinations with others.

I'm sorry but I can't offer assistance installing this plugin for you - there is no 'paid for' service.

Although complex, the plugin doesn't use loads of bandwidth or processing power. There's a fair bit of AJAX processing, but you can turn some of this down in the config. However, it's recommended that you use a caching plugin or a CDN (such as CloudFlare free plan) to keep things super snappy for your visitors. If you don't know what this means, don't worry!

Most map providers (and the weather system, if you use it) require you to use an API for those services. The free tiers should be ample for the average club, but you can pay for additional tokens if you're a big organisation. Which map providers are enabled and used are entirely up to you.
